Unlicensed transceivers are often purchased for occasional or hobby usage to communicate over shorter distances. Unlicensed means that no frequency license is required; immediately after purchase, anyone (even kids) can use these transceivers, or commonly known as walkie talkies. With 0.5 watt output power, they can mostly be used only for short distances, but if the visibility and terrain conditions are good, the range can be extended by several tens of km. Unlicensed (also known as PMR446) devices have pre-programmed channels that can be used in the UK and across Europe without a frequency license.
